Live Music and Kite Festival at Treaty Oak

On my quest to discover live music in the Texas Hill Country during the spring time and SXSW, I learned that Treaty Oak Distillery was holding their 2nd Annual kite festival.  Seeing as we planned to take Loretta to Zilker Park for the first time and the kite festival got cancelled this year, we were thrilled to find one right in our backyard.  This is the most ideal spot to bring your children along for an adult experience.  There is so much room to roam here and the kids love it!  Live music, well crafted cocktails, tasty food and a beautiful property is what you will find at this Texas hill country distillery.  Spread out under a tree, park it at a picnic table or lay out on the lawn.  The fact that they have an annual kite festival just about seals the deal for me.  Lots of folks came out and it truly was the perfect Spring day.

Vibe ⇒ southern comfort, relaxing, communal, spacious

Extras ⇒ 30 acres property with 100 yr old oak trees and hill country views, gift shop/ tasting room/ and tours, live music most weekends (check online events calendar)

Good to know ⇒ Bring a blanket or chairs if you want to camp out for a while, open weekends only, private event booking available in brewery / distillery / outdoors

Spot under an Oak with a great view of the music and the kites.
Country Fool’s Gold was the perfect sound track to this setting. Funky Tonk at its best! Hope to see these guys play again. They made the day.
First kite flying experience for Loretta James.

Deer sausage + fried turkey + garden salad – really tasty bites

We will definitely be keeping an eye on the Treaty Oak events calendar this spring and summer and you can too by visiting Treaty Oak Distilling.

Live Music in the Hill Country during SXSW

Live music is on the mind in Austin, Texas with SXSW coming up this month.  Festival folks and music junkies alike are rolling into town.  I am so thankful to be located just west of music city.  My husband and I met singing and playing in an americana roots band together so we are right where we belong.  However, we were young and wild and free back then and well, we still are, but now with child.  We have also become less willing to compromise our comfort for the live music experience.  I know we aren’t the only ones!  Whether you live in the country (like us!) and don’t want to brave the city flooded with people, or you live in the city and you want to escape the flood BUT you still want to see some live music, I’ve got some suggestions for YOU.  This month we are going to explore some hill country hangouts where you can eat delicious food, drink tasty beverages, listen to live music …and RELAX.  These live music acts are local and the scene is down right hospitable.

While live music IS HAPPENING in the hill country most weekends in the spring and summer, I believe there is so much room for expanding the music scene here.  Mark my words, Hill Country Hipster will be a part of bringing more live music out here to enjoy in the coming years.

Tex Mex Style Beer • Family Owned • Large Indoor/ Outdoor Tasting Room

Weekend Wedding Venues

Seeing how Dripping Springs has been established as the wedding capital of Texas and IT IS engagement season, I found it most appropriate for my first post to take a look at what all the fuss is about.  With over twenty venues officially listed in Dripping Springs proper, there are hundreds more in the surrounding areas.  Needless to say the peaceful and beautiful rolling hills of the “hill country” have become a popular back drop to tie the knot.  Unique, breathtaking, personal and charming are all things that a couple searches for in a wedding venue.  For this post, I am highlighting three venues that have all of that plus offer something that sets them apart from the others.  They all offer lodging on site for the wedding party, your closest friends and family or all of your guests depending on the size of your list.  If you are like my hubs and I, you don’t want the fun to end.  Well with these venues it doesn’t have to after your eight hours are up.  Make it a sleepover!  Walk the grounds and recount your steps from the ceremony.  Let it all sink in.  Gush over the details with your closest friends and family around a fire.  Have a jam session under the stars.  This is exactly what we did and it was by far one of my favorite elements to our wedding experience.

Here are three special venues that allow you to extend perhaps the most anticipated and celebrated day of your life beyond the traditional “one day” into a weekend get-away, an experience to savor.

D6 RETREATEST. 2016 • Family owned • Open Air Chapel with a view • A Couple’s Blank Canvas

The wonderful people at D6 offer that Texas hospitality and warmth.  The simplicity of the space can stand on its own or act as a blank canvas for the couple to paint their own picture.  D6 Retreat is a breath of fresh air for the couple who isn’t looking for all the frills and fuss that can come along with a wedding.  Although new to the wedding scene,  it is obvious D6 is well organized and communicative, and the staff is very involved in ensuring the flow of each event is smooth sailing.

Vibe ⇒ very casual, welcoming, laid back and relaxed

Extras ⇒ 23 acres of primitive hiking, heated pool year round, bon fire pit, pet friendly, great acoustics

Good to know ⇒ cost average – $3,500, ideal for up to 75 wedding guests, sleeps 21 people on-site, each wedding party allotted a 2 night stay included in price, an ALL OUTDOOR venue, 75 white folding chairs, 4  round tables available for use + picnic tables on grounds

The entrance from Bell Springs Rd.  You’ve arrived.  Welcome to the Hill Country.

There are 4 villas on site (including the honey moon suite), each named after the couple’s children.
Each charming lil’ villa is equipped with a washer/ dryer.
The bride is encouraged to take out on a hike the “morning of” to clear her mind and breathe.

There is a symbolism here not to be overlooked.  This chapel reflects the transparency  a marriage requires.  That truth gives this place an energy that will stick with you.

EST. 1996 • Family owned & Operated • Rustic Charm • Full Service

This place is arguably one of the pioneers of this wedding capital and they have it down.  The style and charm of this venue speaks for itself.  Your troubles seem to blow out the window as you truck it down Fitzhugh Rd, one of my favorite country roads in the hill country.  By the time you arrive, you really feel you have been transported to another place and time… and you won’t want to leave.

Vibe ⇒ antiqued, romantic, rustic whimsy

Extras ⇒ wedding packages include day of coordinator, 2 bartenders and in-house DJ,  catering prep area, walk-in coolers for kegs and alcohol, keg taps in bar and biergarten….oh yeah, they have a biergarten – also available for rehearsal dinner

Good to know ⇒ cost ranges from $7,500 – $8,250 (not including lodging), ideal for up to 150 wedding guests, sleeps up to 30 people on-site, per night charge, an INDOOR / OUTDOOR venue, wedding packages include: 150 fruitwood folding chairs, 15 (60″) round tables, 6 banquet tables, 4 cocktail tables available for use + linens AND a lighting package.  bam.

The bride enters the scene here. All rise.
Her aisle is concrete, and at this point so is her destination (wink wink).
This majestic 2 level ball room lies inside the barn’s patina exterior.
With 4 separate lodging quarters and space in between, the photo ops are endless ’round here.
Don’t mind if I do.

I have a thing for this gold and red grass that graces the hill country in late fall / winter.  A white dress would really pop.  Of course the spring and summer green is beautiful too.

No matter the season, this rustic wedding venue is sure to romance the heck out of you and your guests.

EST. 2015 • Family owned & Operated • Peaceful Retreat • Vacation Rental

If you don’t know you are out in the country by the time you pull up to The Creek Haus entrance, just wait until you scoot down the dirt drive and find yourself leaving the business of life behind….along with your wifi connection.  Now this may sound alarming, but with the wide open view of the rolling hills out your window, you are reminded that you are here to relax, unplug and connect with the dear ones right in front of you.  If you are still freaking out, there is a designated service connection area right back up that dirt road from whence you came.  The Creek Haus is a 4 day – 3 night weekend wedding retreat and is owned and operated by the same family as Vista West Ranch.  The lodging areas consist of a private honeymoon suite, the mainhaus and the barnhaus, which are connected by a huge social patio with plenty of lounging space, a fire pit and grill.  The price (listed below) is unbeatable considering the convenience and experience of this rustic weekend wedding venue.

Vibe ⇒ serene, secluded, rustic industrial

Extras ⇒ wedding packages include day of coordinator, 2 bartenders and in-house DJ, indoor AND outdoor ceremony site option, outdoor covered space for cocktail hour

Good to know ⇒ cost average $15,000 (including lodging), ideal for up to 120 wedding guests, sleeps up to 70 people on-site, $150 / per person for weekend = $50/ a night, 4 day and 3 night rental period (THU – SUN), an INDOOR / OUTDOOR venue, wedding packages include: 150 fruitwood folding chairs, 15 (8 foot) farm tables, 30 ceremony benches, lighting package

You can’t miss the tree bark lined fence surrounding The Creek Haus property.
This grand covered patio is where your guests enjoy cocktail hour overlooking the grounds with the creek running through.
Just past the patio through the doors you enter into the reception barn. Plenty of natural light and access to the patio.
I love the texture this enormous fireplace brings to the room.
An ivy arch lay as a backdrop to the bride & groom dinner table.
Just off the reception area there is a powder room and lounge for the bridal party. There is a sweet little private deck out back.
On my left – lawn space for ceremony aside the creek. On my right – the lodging quarters and huge social deck.
The social deck with fire pit, grill, and plenty of space to relax. Cell service is also available here.

Whether you are from out of state or a surrounding city, your crew will feel right at home here.
