JR and I met and fell in love playing in a band together in Los Angeles, California. So music is a big part of our history together and we want it to be a part of Loretta’s history as well.
Loretta’s name was inspired by Loretta Lynn. She keeps us smiling.
Loretta is as fiery as the next red head, sweet as pumpkin pie, and as theatrical as her dad.
She surprises us everyday.
Our idea of a great “date night in” (which we do most weekends) is cooking a delicious meal, watching a classic film, playing music, singing together, and cuddles on the couch.
This one is from the blooper reel.
Please excuse all the imperfections of the video below. We are out of practice! Seeing as it is Easter, we thought we would share a one take of us playing one of our favorite Gillian Welch songs – ‘By the Mark’. I love that this song is reminiscent of spiritual folk music and the words give me the chills every time. You can listen to her full song here.
I’ll leave you with what I hope to be our first family band album cover. I’ll keep you posted on that.
Well Spring is in full swing here in the Austin, Texas Hill Country which means everyone is looking to get outdoors and hear live music! Live music is sprinkled all over this land, everywhere you turn. This is part of the unique magic of Austin and its surrounding hill country. There are many “live music venues” throughout. Jester King Brewery is no secret to the public around here. You can visit their tasting room, tour the brewery, mingle at the communal tables on their expansive property AND hear a little two or three piece band strum some tunes. The convenient location of Stanley’s Farmhouse Pizza just steps away allows patrons to stay for dinner. People seem to come and stay a while. You will see why when you get there.
Vibe ⇒ Farm house feel, reminiscent grounds, hip and vibrant crowd
Extras ⇒ beers incorporate natural surroundings and local agriculture, yard games, grab and go bottles for sale next to brewery porch, property overlooks the charming barnyard housing Stanley’s Farmhouse Pizza, invited to bring your pizza up from Stanley’s, sand box area for kids next to Stanley’s
Good to know ⇒ only open Friday – Sunday, expect to wait in line on Saturday afternoons with nice weather, you won’t mind waiting in line here, it can take hours to get a pizza on Saturday so don’t go starving, live music on Saturday only starting usually around 2pmish, music acts – two to three piece bands usually with a roots inspired sound, this is a great place to celebrate or gather with a group of friends.
On my quest to discover live music in the Texas Hill Country during the spring time and SXSW, I learned that Treaty Oak Distillery was holding their 2nd Annual kite festival. Seeing as we planned to take Loretta to Zilker Park for the first time and the kite festival got cancelled this year, we were thrilled to find one right in our backyard. This is the most ideal spot to bring your children along for an adult experience. There is so much room to roam here and the kids love it! Live music, well crafted cocktails, tasty food and a beautiful property is what you will find at this Texas hill country distillery. Spread out under a tree, park it at a picnic table or lay out on the lawn. The fact that they have an annual kite festival just about seals the deal for me. Lots of folks came out and it truly was the perfect Spring day.
TREATY OAK DISTILLERY
DISTILLERY • BREWERY • BAR & RESTAURANT • PRIVATE & PUBLIC EVENTS
Live music is on the mind in Austin, Texas with SXSW coming up this month. Festival folks and music junkies alike are rolling into town. I am so thankful to be located just west of music city. My husband and I met singing and playing in an americana roots band together so we are right where we belong. However, we were young and wild and free back then and well, we still are, but now with child. We have also become less willing to compromise our comfort for the live music experience. I know we aren’t the only ones! Whether you live in the country (like us!) and don’t want to brave the city flooded with people, or you live in the city and you want to escape the flood BUT you still want to see some live music, I’ve got some suggestions for YOU. This month we are going to explore some hill country hangouts where you can eat delicious food, drink tasty beverages, listen to live music …and RELAX. These live music acts are local and the scene is down right hospitable.
While live music IS HAPPENING in the hill country most weekends in the spring and summer, I believe there is so much room for expanding the music scene here. Mark my words, Hill Country Hipster will be a part of bringing more live music out here to enjoy in the coming years.

Seeing how Dripping Springs has been established as the wedding capital of Texas and IT IS engagement season, I found it most appropriate for my first post to take a look at what all the fuss is about. With over twenty venues officially listed in Dripping Springs proper, there are hundreds more in the surrounding areas. Needless to say the peaceful and beautiful rolling hills of the “hill country” have become a popular back drop to tie the knot. Unique, breathtaking, personal and charming are all things that a couple searches for in a wedding venue. For this post, I am highlighting three venues that have all of that plus offer something that sets them apart from the others. They all offer lodging on site for the wedding party, your closest friends and family or all of your guests depending on the size of your list. If you are like my hubs and I, you don’t want the fun to end. Well with these venues it doesn’t have to after your eight hours are up. Make it a sleepover! Walk the grounds and recount your steps from the ceremony. Let it all sink in. Gush over the details with your closest friends and family around a fire. Have a jam session under the stars. This is exactly what we did and it was by far one of my favorite elements to our wedding experience.
Here are three special venues that allow you to extend perhaps the most anticipated and celebrated day of your life beyond the traditional “one day” into a weekend get-away, an experience to savor.
D6 RETREATEST. 2016 • Family owned • Open Air Chapel with a view • A Couple’s Blank Canvas
The wonderful people at D6 offer that Texas hospitality and warmth. The simplicity of the space can stand on its own or act as a blank canvas for the couple to paint their own picture. D6 Retreat is a breath of fresh air for the couple who isn’t looking for all the frills and fuss that can come along with a wedding. Although new to the wedding scene, it is obvious D6 is well organized and communicative, and the staff is very involved in ensuring the flow of each event is smooth sailing.
